Who does the work
SMB Plastering and Sons is a family firm. Frank does most of the looking and the pricing, Scott is on the tools alongside him, and between them they have been doing this for twenty years. The person who comes and looks at your job is one of the two people who will be standing in the room doing it.
That is the whole argument for a small firm. Nothing gets lost between an estimator and a crew, nobody turns up who has not seen the job, and if something needs deciding halfway through there is somebody there who can decide it.
How a job is priced
After a look at it, and in writing. Plastering prices move on things that are not visible in a photograph: whether the existing plaster is sound, how far out of plumb a wall is, whether a ceiling will take a skim or wants overboarding, and how materials will get into the building.
The written price says what the work includes, what it costs and how long it should take. If something is found once the wall is open, it gets raised at the time with what it means for the price, rather than appearing at the end.
How the site is left
Sheeted before anything starts, swept and cleared down at the end of every day, and the waste taken away rather than stored. In a house somebody is living in that matters more than it does in an empty one, because you are using the rest of the property while the work happens.
Shared entrances and staircases get protected for the length of the job and cleaned daily. The people in the other flats did not order the work and should not have to live in it.
Domestic and commercial
Most of the work is houses, and a steady part of it is commercial: units, offices and mezzanines, where the programme is tighter and more of the work happens around somebody else's opening hours.
The trade is the same either way. What changes is the planning, and a commercial job gets that planning up front rather than being run like a domestic one that happens to be bigger.
What is not offered
Plastering, skimming, screeding, dry lining, rendering, ceilings, artex, decorating, chimney breasts, damp and refurbishment. That is the list. Work outside it gets pointed at somebody who does it properly rather than taken on and learned on your wall.
Electrics, gas and anything structural are brought in from people who hold the certificates for them, because those are the trades where the paperwork is the point.
